Hello, Hello, Hello

How are you all doing this fine month?

Can you believe that we’re over halfway through the year already? I don’t know about you, but it feels like we just had Christmas and New Year. Time seems to go faster and faster.

When I was a child, I’d wonder what my grandmother was talking about when she told me time would speed up, and that age-old saying of youth is wasted on the young. I get it now. I get it all.

We’ve had some changes here at Family Matters.

If you’ve been following us a while, you’ll know that Laura Fox was struggling a…

Let’s discuss the different dynamics of family.

Happy August

Yay for summertime. Well, it’s summer here, in sunny old England. For today anyway. Check back tomorrow; we’ll probably have snow. And yes, I’m English and talking about the weather.

August Prompt — Let’s discuss the different dynamics of family.

We call come from different places, different cultures, different lives. What’s yours?

It’s interesting to see all the things that happen in families and how we deal with them. It’s sometimes hard to imagine being in a family that is totally different to our own.

What’s your family dynamic? Does it…

How to avoid them

For a reader to invest their time in your book, they need to be intrigued, and when they’re intrigued, you need to hook them and pull them in.

There are a series of opportunities authors have to snare the potential reader and pull them into the fictional world.

Think about how you choose your next read.

The title or the cover grabs you; maybe both, then you read the tagline and blurb. One or both of those catch you too. …

If I had to start again, this is what I’d do.

I have various writer friends at different stages of their writing careers, and like anything, we all must start somewhere, but where?

I have been asked many times, what do you do to become a working writer? How do you go about it?

People see that I did it and want to know the recipe, hoping to find the magic ingredient that’ll make it work for them. Sadly, there isn’t one. …

Writers need multiple streams of income.

Photo by dusan jovic on Unsplash

Let’s define terms first.

A working writer is someone who writes as their job.

An income stream is an income, active or passive, that contributes to a larger income.

Creator economy — I’ll explain this.

I’m A Working Writer

When I tell people, I’m a working writer, they tend to assume my income comes from one source — something to do with my writing, in my case, book royalties. After all, I am a published author and it’s probably what I do more than anything else.

However, anyone making that assumption would be wrong. Yes, I do get…

Why we need to stop misusing the word triggered.

One good thing about this century is that mental illness, mental health and awareness of those things are coming into the light and stigma, while still slowly, is easing off. In many ways, we can talk about what bothers us, what upsets us and what aggravates our mental health with less shame than we could a decade ago.

A cheer for progress, and let’s hope it continues.

Unfortunately, it means more and more people self-diagnose themselves with conditions they don’t have because they don’t actually understand them.

I’ve had people tell…

Because I don’t care

The Medium bonus emails came out yesterday, and you can guarantee there’s a plethora of articles to follow it. Some will tell you how they got the bonus after only being here a couple of months; other articles will tell you how they worked their backsides off to get the bonus. And then there are the other articles complaining how hard they worked and still didn’t get the bonus.

I’m sure you’ve seen them in your newsfeed.

What is the Bonus

Back in May, Medium surprised the top 1,000 writers with a $500 bonus. It was unexpected and totally out…

Apparently, all you need to do is stop eating so much

I apologise if the title triggers you. This was the title of an old video I saw on YouTube. I’m not discussing that video here. You can go and watch it by searching on YouTube if you want to see it, but she had this basic idea of just stop eating so much, and I wanted to see if it’s really that simple.

Being Overweight is Your Fault, Or Is It?

If I’ve learnt one thing as a parent of daughters and a man married to a woman, it’s that weight loss, and the agony of it…

It’s not all black and white

A while ago, I wrote an article talking about the Covid 19 vaccines and mental health. I’m sure I’m not the only person avoiding the vaccine due to my mental health and how the side effects would affect me. Not to mention the conspiracy theorists and nay-sayers out there all fuelling an already disordered anxious brain.

Multiple Diagnoses

I have more than one mental illness diagnosed. I think many people do because the brain and all its chemistry are as diverse as we are. One wrong thing and a person tends to have multiple issues.

Mental wellness for parents

Happy July

Can you believe it is July already? How fast has the first half of the year gone?
Today, I want to talk to you about mental health and parenting.

Statistics show that 68% of women and 57% of men with mental illness are also parents. Many children live with a parent who has a long-term mental illness.

As parents, we tend to put our children and their needs first, often neglecting our own mental wellness, which can be even more challenging if you have a mental illness.

This month’s prompt challenges you to write about taking…
